The Barnum & Bailey Circus received at least three or four shipments of animals in January to February 1888, sent to replace stock lost during a fire in their winter quarters in Bridgeport, Connecticut on November 20th, 1887. One such shipment contained six walruses captured in Russia. These animals may have potentially been trained in Hanover, Germany, and may have been transferred to London, England before reaching the United States and arriving in Bridgeport.
